Do It Yourself Rescue Dog Training Basics

by DoItYourself Staff

Do it yourself rescue dog training is not much different from training a normal dog except that there are some considerations - where you dog has been adopted from, its original place of birth, and also its age.

People are always looking for unique ways to trim their daily expenditure. Now if you are a dog owner or planning to be one in the near future, then you may cut down your expenses by not hiring a professional dog trainer. You may choose to do all the training by yourself. But when you opt for training a rescue dog, situations can be a bit different.

Developing a Bond

When training rescue dogs, remember that they have just got their out of their shelter. You may not be aware of where they have actually come from. Often in such cases, they develop some training issues. These training issues are mostly bad habits like jumping on strangers, destructive chewing, chasing other pets, counter surfing, and so on. You have to take time and patience and gradually help them do away with their bad habits. The first step you need to take towards training your rescue dog is developing a bond. If your dog is confident enough and completely trusts you, then the training process will not be too tough for you to handle.

Teaching Basic Etiquette

Rescue dogs often fail to learn some basic etiquette in their early age. Now when you adopt them, you need to spend some extra time. You should not however, confine yourself when such issues arise and gladly help them pick up the etiquette.

Patience is the Keyword

It has also been observed that some older dogs just refuse to learn new etiquette or behavior. They have almost set themselves in their earlier ways. At these times, you need to be more patient when dealing with such dogs. You need to reward them at times when they perform the right action and make them learn the difference between good and bad actions.

Knowing its Excellence

If you have adopted a dog from an animal control, then it’s more likely you won’t know anything about their likes and dislikes, and also what they excel at. It is often seen that rescue dogs keep their owners or trainers on their toes when they are trying to find out what triggers them the most. Sometimes you also need to take care of certain basic issues. At times, it’s seen that the dog may not have been housebroken ever. In such instances, you need to train them as you would have done in case of a puppy.

Handle with Care

In cases where serious behavioral patterns are observed, you need to handle situations with extra precaution. If your dog is aggressive, you need to address it more patiently to gradually do away with their aggression. On the other hand, if the dog is timid, then it will progress at a pace much slower compared to others.

Rewarding Experience Altogether

Under no circumstances should you put pressure on your dog to perform. Time and again, it has also been seen that rescue dogs pay back their new owners several times more just for the fact that you have given them a new life. Never be scared or deterred to adopt a dog as these lovely creatures will be more than just your watchdog. Do it yourself rescue dog training more than often turns out to be a rewarding and fulfilling experience.
