Do sub panels have a standard maximum current load?

by DoItYourself Staff

The average maximum current load of a main electrical panel is usually somewhere between 100 and 200 amps for a household, but sub panels usually hold a smaller charge. Smaller ones are rated differently depending on what they will be used for. For instance, panels that run the electricity for things like lights may only need to be rated at 15 or 20 amps. However, if you need to make a sub panel to run something like a clothes dryer or a water heater, it needs its own panel and circuit breaker and has to be able to take on a higher load of power. So, there is a standard depending on the type of item for which the sub panel is going to be used.
