Do Your Part For Energy Independence

by DoItYourself Staff

Energy independence is a goal that has been promoted in recent years as we have witnessed soaring gasoline and other energy costs. There are many simple ways to promote energy independence and conserve energy in your own home.

Support Sustainable Energy Resources

There are numerous local power companies across the U.S. that have at least a portion of their power supplied by sustainable energy sources, like solar, geothermal and wind energy. Over a decade ago, power companies were required to diversify at least a portion of their power generation to utilize at least one or a combination of these power resources.

In many areas, it is also possible to choose what type of energy you want your power company to use for your home energy. Simply contact your power company and electing the type of coverage you want for your energy needs.

Be a Conscientious User of Power

While you may not have the resources to install a solar power system or wind turbine on your property or near your home, you can still make an effort to reduce your energy usage.

  • Use appliances that are Energy Star Certified. These include most major home appliances, televisions, computer monitors and many other large energy users.
  • Turn off lights when they are not needed.
  • Keep the air conditioner set at 78 degrees or higher and the heater set at 68 degrees or lower.
