Does a Leaking Shower Faucet Waste a lot of Water??

by DoItYourself Staff

Does a leaking shower faucet actually waste a lot of water? That depends on how often it drips and how large the drip is, but there are some surprising facts.

  • A fast drip can waste 20 to 30 gallons of water per day in a shower.
  • A slow drip can waste 5 to 10 gallons of water per day in a shower.
  • In practical terms, a bath takes about 50 gallons of water depending upon the size of your tub. A 10-minute shower takes about 2.5 gallons per minute. So a leaking shower faucet is equal to a 10-minute shower per day extra charged to your water bill.
  • If it is the hot water leaking you are also paying for your water heater to keep hot water available for this drip.
