Does a slate tile roof last longer then asphalt shingles?

by DoItYourself Staff

Slate tile roof is made of natural slate stones that can last for 175 years. Asphalt shingles, on the other hand, are made of either organic waste paper mixed with asphalt, adhesive and ceramic granules or layered with fiberglass mat. Both materials have a life span of 15 to 20 years only, and even less in areas with warmer climate. Aside from being durable, slate tiles as roofing materials make great insulator for hot and cold temperatures and are aesthetically appealing. Because of these advantages, slate tiles are 20 times more expensive than asphalt shingles.
