Does vinyl fencing hold up better in wet climates than wood fences?

by DoItYourself Staff

Vinyl fencing, while excellent for wet climates, is not the only material that can be considered for this type of environment. Properly treated, wood fencing can easily last for 20 years, but please note that it has to be properly treated. In other words, the wood material must be moisture-proofed properly when it comes from the factory. The moisture-proofing usually consists of soaking the fencing in a chemical stew that replaces the wood’s normal moisture with an anti-moisture barrier. Creosote has been used for years, but see if you can find one that is slightly more environmentally friendly.
