Door Handle Repair Guide

If your door handle is old looking, or it’s just time for an upgrade, try replacing it, that’s generally easier to do that than try to repair a door handle.

Remove the Old Handle

Sometimes this can be the hardest part of the whole job. If your door handle is attached with screws then just unscrew the handle. But some handles are designed without these screws. If that’s the case look for a little slot with a piece of metal sticking out. Use a flathead screwdriver or a key to press in on the metal until the handle pops off.

There should be a plate under the handle. You will use the same method for this. Look for the slot to place the screwdriver in and just pop this part off too.

The Latch

With the plate off you should see a few screws that hold the latch in place. Go ahead and remove those. Using a drill can be helpful for this part. (Make sure you have on goggles!)

Now that you have the old latch out, you can just place the new one in, and screw it in to place.

New Handles

Now you’re ready to go ahead and put the new handles on. Be sure that if you’re using screws to secure the new handle that you don’t over tighten them. This can cause problems with the handle working if they are too tight. It’s best to use a screwdriver and set the drill aside for this part.

Now just check to make sure the handles work properly and smoothly.
