A dowel is a solid rod, usually made of wood, though sometimes they are made of metal or plastic. A dowel is a form of fastener, used in making joints in furniture, particularly chair legs and backs. Dowels have various other uses as well, such as axles in children’s toys, supports for hanging keys or hats or tools.
Dowel Rods
The dowel rod employed in wood work is usually made into smaller pieces called dowel pins when used for joining. These are sometimes fluted along the side into order to allow more glue adhesion between the dowel pin and the hole into which it is placed.
Dowel pins are manufactured and readily available, though some wood workers like to make there own dowel pins, since they know they will be cut specifically for the job at hand and will have a better custom fit.
In stone work, steel dowels are often used to secure two pieces of stone together. Holes are drilled into each piece of stone, then the dowel is inserted between them and cement or some other form of adhesive is used.
