Driveway Motion Detector Alarm Systems

by DoItYourself Staff

A driveway motion detector can alert you when someone is approaching, which makes it a useful home security feature. If you have a long driveway, this is especially great--and not only in the event that there are prowlers. It is also useful if you are expecting company.

Beam Sensors

A driveway motion detector is typically wireless and uses a beam sensor. An infrared driveway motion detector is not always the best choice due to the cold metal of the vehicle. Once the light beam is broken, the alarm will sound within your house to alert you to the presence of a vehicle.

Easy to Install

The typical driveway motion detector has its own power supply and consists of two wireless units. The beam sensor is placed at the end of the driveway, and the receiver is placed inside the house. There is no heavy or expensive installation required.

Some Caveats

Even though a driveway motion detector system is a great idea, there is one issue that plagues this device. These units have limitations as to distance. Either purchase a unit that will cover the distance or place the beam unit further up the driveway.
