If your dryer has begun to squeak when tumbling, it’s possible that it’s time for a dryer belt repair or replacement. While not overly difficult, it does involve some disassembling and reassembling.
First Fix – Double Checking Parts
Do a double check of the idler pulley, glides, and rollers. These may wear out quickly and put additional stress on the belt causing it to prematurely break. If you notice that the belt is worn and your dryer is still young, replacing these pieces as well as the belt may ensure that it lasts longer.
Second Fix – Actually Changing the Belt
- First, you’ll disconnect all pieces – the vent, any gas lines, and most importantly the electrical plugs. Make sure you check the outside of the unit for fasteners that assist in removing the covering. Remove the top first and then the front panel.
- Once the front casing is removed, pull the drum forward.
- Remove the belt as well as any lint or dust that may be hanging around.
- Replace the belt, making sure that any information you have on the old one matches the new one.
- Fit the new belt through the tensioner and around the motor pulley. Be sure that the traction grooves are facing the pulley the right way.
- Replace all screws in the reverse order to which you removed them after sliding the front panel back in.
- Once all pieces are replaced, plug the dryer back in and replace it to its original position.
These directions may vary depending on the model of your dryer. Be sure to check your model type and find any specific directions, either in your manual or online.
