Easily Paint an Existing Wood Wall Shelf

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Screwdriver
  • Detergent and sponge
  • Paint stripper
  • Sander/sandpaper
  • Primer
  • Paint

A wood wall shelf is a practical storing solution or may also be a piece of home décor, but when the color deteriorates or it no longer matches the rest of your furniture, you need to paint the shelf. The wall shelf will have to be removed and you will also need some supplies.

Step 1 – Prepare the Shelf

Take away all objects from the shelf and use a screwdriver to remove the shelf from the wall and be able to paint it.

Step 2 – Clean the Shelf

Sand the shelf with 220 grit sandpaper and then clean it using a mild detergent and sponge. Allow to dry.

Step 3 -- Use Paint Stripper

Use paint stripper to remove the original paint from the shelf. Apply on all areas evenly and then rub, until the paint is removed. If the paint persists, you may sand the shelves. Remove all dust with a brush.

Step 4 – Apply Primer

Apply 1 or 2 coats of primer. Wait for each coat of primer to dry before you apply the next.

Step 5 – Apply Paint

Apply the paint in 1 or 2 thin coats. Allow 24 to 48 to dry before you screw the shelf back on to the wall.
