Every year, swallows love to build nests right in the eaves of your roof. For some people this doesn't pose a very big problem so long as the nests can be knocked down every year. For other people, however, swallows pose a problem as they swoop down from the eaves and attack people to protect their young. To prevent swallows from building nests in your eaves this spring you will need:
- 1/4 - 1/2 inch mesh netting
- Hooks or a staple gun
- Ladder
- Scissors
Cut the mesh so that it will be able to reach from the edge of the roof to the wall below your eaves. Staple or hook the mesh to your roof and the exterior walls making sure there is no way they can get up inside the eaves. If you are worried about damaging your walls or roof with staples and hooks you can use tape, but it may not stand up as well to weathering. Leave the nets on until the spring season is through.
Removing a Bird's Nest From Your Eaves
If a bird has built a nest in your eaves you will have to climb a ladder to see if there are eggs in it before you can remove it. Take down old bird's nests with a powerful water hose or a long pole.
