Effective Fireplace Screen Tools That You Unknowingly Own

While fireplace screen tools can be purchased at your local hardware store, you may already have some items you can use around your home. The items below are some suggested tools you can use in your fireplace without the added cost of a tool kit.

Brooms
Each fireplace screen tool kit comes with a soft brush for cleaning up ashes around and in the fireplace. However, a broom will do an adequate job for the task. If you have a small whisk broom, any kind of handheld broom, or a dustpan and brush kit, then you already have all you need to act as a hearth broom.

Small Shovels
Similarly, many gardeners have small spades or shovels with a flat nose for use outdoors. These can be used in the place of the flat nosed shovels that are generally part of a fireplace tool set.

Pokers

There is often a need for a poker to move logs in the fireplace or to push a log back into the fire. If you don’t buy a tool set, look in the garage for a spare piece of rebar or for a crowbar or extra jack handle. Any of these fireproof tools can be used in the place of pokers.

Gloves
Be sure to wear gloves when handling any kind of a poker. They needn’t been fireplace gloves as sold in a kit. Leather work or garden gloves work just as well as fireplace gloves.
