Egg Poacher

by DoItYourself Staff

Learning how to poach eggs is very easy if you have an egg poacher, but without one it can be very difficult. An egg is poached by frying it in hot water until it becomes solid. There is a way to make your own egg poacher, but it may not work as well as a real machine.

  • Step 1: Heat up a large skillet half full of water, a teaspoon of salt, and a tablespoon of vinegar.
  • Step 2: Carefully crack your eggs over top of the simmering water and let them cook. Don't let the yolks break. The less you play with the eggs while they cook the better.
  • Step 3: Once the eggs have been fully cooked to your taste, take each one out of the egg poacher with a holed serving utensil. Drain out any water and place them on your plate.

Egg Poacher Helpful Hints

The vinegar helps the eggs stay in their perfect round shape, essential aspect of an egg poacher. If you are having trouble with the yolks you are probably handling the eggs too roughly. Lightly tap the egg shell on the edge of the pan before cracking it over the water.
