An egress window is a basement window that can be used as a fire escape if needed. The window is usually beneath the ground level and is only exposed by a tunnel that reaches up towards the edge of the house. In case of an emergency, it’s a good idea to learn how to use an egress window and teach your children too.
- Step 1: Take the screen off of the egress window.
- Step 2: Open the window and climb out into the tunnel.
- Step 3: Open the second set of windows that divide the tunnel from the outside.
- Step 4: Climb up and out of the egress window.
An egress window may have a number of unique features. For example, some models come with a security code so that burglars can't use the window to get in. In the case of an egress window that has a long tunnel, a ladder may be installed to help you get out.
Egress Window Installation
An egress window is much easier to install when a basement window is already in place, but they can be added to a basement without windows. When installing an egress window make sure it is not too high off of the ground.
