Electrical Floor Outlet Safety Considerations

by DoItYourself Staff

Safety should always be a concern when it comes to electrical appliances, but especially with electrical floor outlets. These tips should help you maintain a safe home.

Location and Safety

Floor outlets in rooms frequented by children require extra attention. Safety covers aren’t an expensive option for increasing safety, and can potentially save a life and your home.

You’ll also want to consider window treatments and furniture when it comes to your floor outlets. An outlet placed directly under a floor-length curtain can increase safety concerns. Furniture placed directly in front of outlets can be a cause of concern as well. If you’re not using an outlet, it’s best to place safety plugs in the socket.

Prongs and Grounding

If you have an older home, you may have the simple two-prong outlets. These aren’t necessarily dangerous, but it’s certainly safer to have these upgraded to a three prong style. The extra prong provides a ground for the circuit, which lessens the chance of the circuit overheating or worse.

Internal Workings

Whether you have floor outlets or outlets in other places in your home, it’s important to ensure that all the internal workings are secure, tight, and in place. A loose connector can cause sparking, overheating, and other damage to the plug.

When in doubt, it’s best to call a certified electrician to inspect and update or upgrade any floor outlets you may have.
