by DoItYourself Staff

Every apartment and household should have at least one emergency survival kit. These kits often make the difference between life and death in dire situations. You want to make sure that your kits are fully supplied and their contents are in good order, so checking them every month or so is a good habit to get into. Also making sure you have enough supplies for every family member in the house is very important. You can buy prepared survival kits but making your own is always best as you can customize it to your liking.

First Aid Is Not an Option

Ideally, your emergency survival kit should contain at least one first aid kit. First aid kits contain bandages, antiseptic, syringes, inhalers and many other vital pieces of equipment. Majority of first aid kits are capable of being rolled up tightly and compactly so they can be stored almost anywhere and are very easy to move around. All first aid kits will also include instructions on how to use each piece of equipment and how to treat certain small injuries. This may not be adequate, however, is some situation. One of the greatest assets to you kit is knowledge. You should make sure that at least one person in the household is qualified in first aid.

Fire Safety During Emergencies

Fire blankets and fire extinguishers should also be kept in your kit. You can buy miniature fire extinguishers that are great for putting out small fires. Miniature fire extinguishers are also great to be kept in the trunk of your car. Fire blankets are great at covering and smothering small fires quickly and effectively with minimal damage, a definite must for any kit.

Keeping the Lights On

Flashlights, lights and batteries should be included as well. In an emergency there’s always the chance that the power is going to go out and you don’t want to be stuck in the dark, especially if there are people injured. Make sure to have flashlights and flood lights in your pack as well as plenty of spare batteries. You should carry batteries of all sorts, not just the type required to power your flashlights.

Warmth and Food

If you have shelter then the 2 most important things are warmth and food. Keep a supply of several emergency solar blankets. These blankets retain body warmth in very cold conditions and are indispensable in a cold weather emergency. Make sure that you have a wood burning portable camp stove for cooking. Do not rely on fuel based camp stoves because there may be instances where you can not obtain more fuel. Make sure you have a supply of emergency food or MREs stored in a safe, dry place.

Being prepared for an emergency by having the right equipment is vital. Make sure to check the contents of your kit are up to date and not expired. Remember to get rid of any items that have expired and to replace them immediately. Make sure you familiarize yourself with the equipment stored in your emergency survival kit and you’ll be able to survive any event that comes your way.
