Excavate

by DoItYourself Staff

In the building of a home, the site must be excavated. In order to excavate a site, a large hole must be dug where the foundation will be set in. To excavate a building site, a bulldozer and a backhoe are usually employed.

The hole that is excavated will then be filled with the materials which comprise the foundation of the home. In planning, the first thing done on a site is to excavate. This is sometimes called breaking ground, though that generally means the ceremonial beginning of an excavation.

Problems When you Excavate

Problems that can occur when you excavate a site have to do with previously existing pipe, underground gas and electrical lines, tree root systems and large rocks. When you excavate, it’s always an educated guess as to what will be discovered in the excavation site.

A large amount of dirt will, of course, come out of the ground when you excavate, so an area must be designated and cleared before hand, where that dirt and debris will be pushed to temporarily until the site is finished and the dirt is either utilized or hauled away.
