External Flash Units for Digital Cameras
External flash units are an interesting piece of kit for anybody who loves cameras and photography. These flash units can be used to make your photos a much higher quality and help prevent "red eye."
Why Use a Flash?
A camera flash is designed to provide artificial light when it's too dark to take a photo any other way. Flashes are very common, most cameras come with built-in flashes which can be used in a number of different modes. A single flash will often struggle to illuminate the entire picture.
An external flash gun is much more powerful than a built-in flash. While it won't necessarily make the photos any lighter, it will illuminate subjects from further away.
Bounce Flash
A powerful external flash makes it possible to use bounce flash techniques when taking photos. This is where the flash is aimed at a wall or a ceiling instead of pointing it directly towards the subjects. This will create a much more subtle effect and reduce any problems with glare.
Practice will be required to hone and improve your bounce flash skills, it's worth taking the time to learn how to master this skill because it's very useful.
In Sync
External flash guns are not built into the camera but they can be connected using a lead. The lead from the camera will help time the camera flash when a photo is taken. Some models of digital cameras have specialist official flash guns, using these will offer many more automatic features.
Red Eye
The most popular reason for professionals using a flash gun is to help reduce the possibility of photos suffering from red eye. Red eyes in photos look terrible and should be something all photographers do their best to avoid. By bouncing the flash off walls you can prevent suffering from any problems with red eye.
It may be possible to use software to remove red eyes after the event, however these aren't always very accurate or effective. You will be able to benefit from much better results if you learn how to avoid red eyes in the first place.
Long Distance Photography
External flash units are also very popular with anyone who wants to take a long photo at a long distance. These flash devices are much more powerful which means you don't need to get as close to the subject. Some of the most advanced external flash guns also feature zoom functions. This will make it much easier to focus the light in a very particular area of the picture.
When taking photos of wildlife, the ability to take them at a long distance will not only make your life easier, but it will also make the whole experience much safer.
External flashes can be large and can be bulky to carry around with you, and many of them are quite complex to learn to use.
