Beginners who are cautious tend to move the router too slowly, which can burn the work and dull your bit.
But if you move the router too quickly, your cut will be rough and your bit could break. So finding the right speed is important.
In general, push the router fast enough that it actually sounds like you're putting a little stress on the motor. The motor's pitch will change slightly and you'll be able to hear it through your ear muffs. At this speed, the chips should be big and fluffy. Your cut should be clean without any burns.
