Faucet Mount Water Filter vs Under-Sink Water Filter

by DoItYourself Staff

If you would like to filter the water from your kitchen sink to make it safer for drinking, you will probably choose between a faucet mount water filter and an under-sink filter. There are advantages and disadvantages to both types of filters, and this article will provide some basic information to make your decision a little easier.

Faucet Mount Water Filters

Faucet mount water filters are the easiest way to fill the water from their kitchen sink faucet. In most cases, you simply need to screw them onto your faucet to begin enjoying carbon filtered water. They are very convenient in that you can usually flip a lever to choose between filtered and unfiltered water. They are also usually the least expensive type of water filters.

Although inexpensive and convenient, faucet mount water filters are often prone to leaks. You also need to be very careful with how much water pressure you use when the filter is installed. If you open the water valve all the way, the pressure could cause the filter to dislodge and fall off of the faucet. Finally, faucet mount filters may be very difficult to screw on to some types of faucet fixtures.

Under-Sink Water Filters

Under-sink water filters are usually much more dependable than faucet mount filters. Also, their robust construction means there are few limitations on the amount of pressure these types of filters can handle. Like faucet mount filters, under-sink water filters usually use a carbon-based filtration system to filter out contaminants. However, they usually have much larger filters that allow for faster filtering of large volumes of water.

While under-sink water filters are very effective at filtering large volumes of water, they usually don't allow you to choose between filtered and unfiltered water. This prohibits you from bypassing the filter when it is not needed. Also, under-sink filters may need to be professionally installed.
