Features to Look for in a Gas Tankless Water Heater

by DoItYourself Staff

A gas tankless water heater is a good choice for domestic hot water needs. It is also referred to as a demand or instantaneous water heater. Demand heaters don’t store hot water in a storage tank. The unit provides hot water only on demand. When you turn on the hot water tap, cold water flows into the unit and is heated by a gas burner. The heater may be fuelled by propane or natural gas. Below are some key features to consider as you shop for a gas demand water heater.

Efficiency

The efficiency of a heater is indicated by the Energy Factor (EF). This is represented by a yellow energy star sticker. The most efficient models on the market have the energy star qualification. A high EF promises to be a more efficient heater. Choose a model that has an EF of 0.8 or higher. Energy efficient models utilize less energy to heat the water. Water heaters that rate highly in energy efficiency are more expensive. However, these models are a cost-effective choice in the long run due to lower energy costs.

Venting

Gas demand water heaters may use a direct vent or power vent system. Direct vent heaters draw air from outside for combustion. They also discharge combustion gases outside through a sidewall. Direct vent models save on energy, as they do not utilize already conditioned air from within the house. They also don’t backdraft combustion gases into the house. Power vent heaters draw air from indoor space where the heater is installed. This robs the house of conditioned air which adds to energy utilization. The heater uses an electric fan to discharge flue gases outside. Use of electricity increases energy consumption and costs. In the event of a power outage, your heater would be unable to operate. Direct vent models are best if you want to promote energy efficiency in your home. However, you need to be sure that the venting system of your preferred model complies with your local building code.

Inbuilt Air Filter

This is an important feature that can help you downscale heater maintenance. It minimizes the accumulation of dirt and debris inside the heater. This reduces frequent service calls. It also extends the life of your heater.

Eco-Friendly

If you have green concerns, shop for a model with minimal emission of greenhouse gases. Components of these heaters should also be recyclable and replaceable. This means less wastage ends up in landfills.

Safety

Flammable vapors outside the heater or accidental gas leakage can ignite the unit. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has set the standards for residential gas powered heaters. The ANSI stipulates that gas powered heaters must be designed in such a way that accidental ignition is prevented. This is referred to as the Flammable Vapor Ignition Resistant Standard (FVIR). It reduces the risk of accidental ignition of flammable vapors by the pilot light. An ANSI certified heater assures you of high safety standards. Seek a model with features that prevent accidental fires. Some models integrate a fire protection sensor which alerts you in the event of a fire.
