Finding and Identifying Crawl Space Mold
Crawl space mold is a type of fungus that grows naturally on plants and is most often associated with humid crawl spaces in places such as bathrooms, basements and attics. Mold spores travel through the air and when the right conditions for breeding occur, they grow fast and may turn into a problem. Initially, mold indicates greater humidity levels that should be taken care of as soon as possible. In this way, you will stop fungus from spreading around your home.
Spotting the Crawl Space Mold
The first thing to do is to identify and inspect the mold in crawl spaces. If moisture is excessive and ventilation poor, mold has the right conditions to grow and flourish. If the air is stuffy or a bad smell is discovered, mold breeding has already started. Ventilate the space for as long as possible. Then try and find mold in the corners and in any moist area. Check all niches and corners, use a flashlight if the space is poorly lit or has no windows (i.e. basement or closets).
Identifying Crawl Space Mold
If you find mold in moist areas, it is important to remember the color of the mold in order to select the appropriate method to treat it. Be careful not to spread the mold and especially not to breathe it in. It can cause various allergic reactions and/or respiratory problems. If the mold has already spreading at full speed, professional help may be required. The expert will determine the type of mold and help you avoid this problem in the future. If you find mold in your basement or house, you may ask your neighbors whether they had had similar problem before. The fungi may be typical for the area and the problem may be common. This may help you determine the fungus type without seeking professional help.
How to Avoid the Appearance of Crawl Space Mold
The best prevention is regular airing of your home or basement. If this is not an option, you should think of other ways to go about it. One approach is to frequently treat the crawl space with anti-fungus chlorine solutions or to use a humidity controller or dryer which keeps the air dry. Moist conditions are a good friend of mold and should be kept in reasonable limits. Put a barometer in the crawl space in order to keep an eye on the level of humidity. If it starts to increase, take precautions immediately because before long, the mold will begin to spread. Air out the space or turn on the dryer to minimize humidity in the crawling space.
Precautions while Treating the Crawl Space Mold
Keep in mind that anti-mold solutions are typically poisonous. Do not breathe in fungus spores and do not touch them if your hands are not protected. Use glasses and gloves while treating them. In addition, use some cloth to cover your month and nose as to prevent breathing in, swallowing or even absorption of the mold through your skin.
