Finding Hidden Storage in the Bedroom
by Alyssa Davis
Storage in the bedroom can be difficult to come by. Finding the perfect hidden spot for out of season clothing, extra blankets and jewelry is a daunting task. However, finding hidden storage in a bedroom is a job that can be accomplished with a few additional pieces and some creative rearranging.
Under the Bed Storage
Under the bed storage is one of the most convenient ways to create hidden storage in the bedroom. There are fabric boxes, as well as long, flat plastic boxes that are designed specifically to fit under the bed. Some boxes come with zippered tops, while others come with lids. Some lids are even hinged in the middle, so that there is no need to pull the box completely out from under the bed. Choose the ones that will be the easiest to gain access to in the available space.
Out of season clothes, shoes, accessories and an overflow of clothing are all perfect candidates for under the bed storage. Just be sure that these items are stored in containers or bags that are durable, keep them free of dirt and protect them from gathering allergens. There is nothing worse than pulling out a sweater to wear only to find that it is dirty after coming out of the under the bed container. Also consider placing risers under the bed to raise it up a few inches. This creates additional storage space and is easily hidden with an extra-long bed skirt. Most home decor and bed and bath shops carry bed risers.
Hassocks
If there is a chair and footstool in the room, consider replacing it with a cube storage hassock. Storage hassocks come in a variety of colors and sizes to blend in with any decor. Added to the extra storage space is the new seating area that the hassock also provides. Store blankets, sheets, extra pillows or reading material out of sight and inside the hassock. No one is the wiser, and the extra storage will help keep the room neat and tidy.
Closets
Closets are a great place for storage in a bedroom. If the closet is big enough, linens and blankets can also be stored on high shelves inside. Large plastic tubs or space saving bags are ideal for keeping the linens clean and free of dust. Make use of the back of the door to hang a jewelry organizer or a hanging shoe holder. The pieces will be up off of the floor or out of a crowded drawer and organized in a convenient location and manner. Although the closet itself is typically not hidden from view, the interior of the closet provides the homeowner with ample space for hiding things from sight.
Hat Boxes
Decorative hat boxes are a fun and romantic way to store things out of sight. Whether perched atop a dresser or shelf, or stacked in graduated sizes on the floor, hat boxes offer ample storage space and take up little room. The variety of fabric and decorative designs covering hat boxes allows decorators to match a room's decor with relative ease. Department stores and their discount counterparts often carry hat boxes in their home decor section.
