Fire Bricks

by DoItYourself Staff

The most important part of installing a fireplace is installing the fire bricks. Fire bricks are designed to withstand the extremely high temperatures of a fireplace. The bricks are good for retaining and radiating heat as well. Every fireplace needs to have fire bricks. This is because they protect the home from the heat and potentially dangerous fire.
While installing your fireplace you will have to install the fire bricks. This is usually done after the base is built. When you install the bricks make sure to take extra care in handling them so they don’t get dropped as they might crack or break.

The mortar you will use should be very thick. The best way to think of it is it should be the consistency of cake batter. Make sure to wipe off the extra mortar while installing the firebricks but be careful not to knock the bricks out of place.

Tips for Choosing Your Fire Bricks

Fire bricks often come in many different types. Before you make your choice of bricks you should check out the various types and how they handle the conditions. Also try to have the fire bricks be as smooth as possible. This will allow for a better fit when installing the bricks.
