Fire Code Fines Explained
A fire code is set by the local fire department and breaking the code can lead to a fine for those responsible. The fire code will vary from area to area and state to state. Permits can also be granted for specific events.
Fire Exits
All commercial premises need to have fire exits which should be left unlocked during business hours. This is for the safety of those in the building. Failure to do so will result in a large fine if it is discovered by fire marshals who arrive to inspect the building. The amount of the fine will vary. Exits that are either locked or blocked by other items are in full violation of the fire code.
Overcrowding
Overcrowding can occur when people turn up for an event and gain entry even though earlier estimated figures were set at a lower level. This often happens in places such as concerts in clubs. If there’s a suspicion that this might be happening, fire marshals will arrive during the event. If they find the building overcrowded, they will close down the event and fine those responsible.
Fire Safety
Part of a fire code is having fire safety equipment available and functioning. Failure to have extinguishers, fire doors, hoses and other fire safety equipment will result in a fine under the fire code.
