Fireplace Installation Mistakes Everyone Should Avoid

by DoItYourself Staff

People can make many mistakes during a fireplace installation. You can avoid these mistakes by taking more care in what we are doing. In this way, the installation will be appropriate and long-lasting. Some mistakes may include ignoring the local construction regulations and purchasing a wrong fireplace model.

1 – Selecting the Fireplace Model

Check the fireplace model thoroughly, and ask the shop personnel for assistance in case you are not sure. If you ignore some highly important things, you can buy a fireplace model which is simply not the one that you wanted.

For example, if you decide that you want to purchase an electric fireplace, check that it can be connected into an ordinary outlet on the wall. Make sure that it does not need hard wiring, and make sure also that the electric outlet to which you want to connect the fireplace is located at the correct height.

Read the description and instructions carefully, if you would like to purchase a fireplace from a website on the Internet. If the fireplace you desire is an electric model, check whether it requires a can of gel, to give it that somewhat real appearance of a flame blazing inside. However, keep in mind there are also other fireplace models which do not need a flame.

2 – Cutting Down the Drywall

You may think that a fireplace, which is wall-mounted, requires a recessed space in the wall, but this is not the case. Almost all wall-mounted fireplace models have a surround plate and they just recess into it, therefore you will not need to cut down a part of your drywall to install the fireplace. Make sure that you read the manufacturer’s instructions thoroughly and carefully. before you try installing the fireplace.

3 – Calling a Builder

Call a builder, or bring a chimney sweep to your home, to inspect the work and give you some advice about the fireplace installation. Check the local construction regulations thoroughly, because they can serve you as useful guidelines when you are installing the fireplace. Most regions across the United States have these regulations, and you need to follow them in order to have a safe and correct fireplace installation.

4 – Inspecting the Flue

One of the worst mistakes that people make, is that of not checking the soundness of the flue. This is important, because it determines whether you have a safe fireplace or not. A flue is the shaft which transfers the fumes and smoke out and away from the fireplace.

Make sure that the flue is installed properly, because if it has an incorrect installation, it will not work properly, and the fumes from the fireplace may flow into the rooms of your house. They will fill the air with carbon monoxide, and cause a great health hazard. Keep in mind that carbon monoxide does not have an odor, taste or color, and it can be deadly if introduced into the respiratory system. Call a professional, and ask him to inspect the chimney and the flue, to avoid carbon monoxide leaks and other health hazards.
