Fitting the Right Window Sensor for Your Security System

by DoItYourself Staff

A window sensor is an integral part of a home security system. This is a type of alarm that is installed on a window. A sensor sets off if someone tries to open the window from the outside. When the window sensor is set off, it makes a loud noise to alert those inside. There are different types of window sensors available. You must connect the window sensor you choose to your home security system.

Types

There are mainly two types of window sensors available - wired and wireless. Wired window sensors have to be connected to the alarm system with the help of wires. Wireless window sensors do not require any connections. They merely have to be attached to the window for them to give out signals when the window is opened from outside. Some wireless window sensors can also give out signals if a window is broken into, which makes them excellent security devices.

Sizes

Most window sensors are usually similar to the size of a small soap bar. The size of these security devices is a huge advantage, as they are not bulky and big. This makes it extremely easy to install them on almost any kind of window. Another advantage of their small sizes is that they are not noticeable from the outside as well.

Functions

The main function of window sensors is to keep intruders from breaking their way into homes through windows. This is possible because as soon as a window that has a sensor attached to it is breached, it sets off an alarm so that those inside can be alerted and can take necessary actions. Some window sensors can even be programmed to call a phone number if a window in the home is breached and the alarm system is activated. This feature is excellent for those away on business trips or vacations, as it allows them to notify authorities quickly in such a situation.

What to Consider When Purchasing a Window Sensor

Although it may seem like wireless window sensors are ideal because they do not require much installation, it does have some drawbacks. It is possible for the signal between the home security system and the window sensor to be intercepted. If an intruder is able to interrupt or disable the signal between both devices, it can result in a home being vulnerable to invasion without the knowledge of the homeowner. To avoid this kind of a situation, it may be better to install a wired window sensor, as it is less likely to be disabled from the outside.

The main benefit of window sensors is that they can alert those inside a home when intruders attempt tampering with windows from the outside. It is very likely that the intruders will leave when the alarm on the window sensor is set off, thus averting an unwanted situation.
