Five Tips for Replacing Water Filter Cartridges

by DoItYourself Staff

Water filter cartridges need to be replaced regularly. A good water filtration system is not simply a source of safe drinking water, but it can also improve air quality in a home environment since it filters chlorine, which would otherwise vaporize into the air. For optimal results, a filter cartridge should be replaced regularly. Here are some tips that will make replacing water filter cartridges easier and more effective.

1. Buy the Right Replacement Cartridge

Not any cartridge you pick off the shelf is ideal for your specific water filter. There are a myriad of different types and makes of filters and each brand might have different models that, to the inexpert eye, would look exactly the same. To buy the right filter cartridge, you need to look for the model number which is usually found on the housing of the filter. Filter cartridges are usually also available in different grades and prices, depending on the amount of impurities they are able to remove. Do not let this confuse you. Ideally, check your present filter and either get the same grade, or improve on it.

2. Get Organized

Before commencing the replacement process, get organized. Find a large-enough working space while keeping in mind that you will probably be spilling water. Unpack the cartridge kit and cross check the contents with the contents list provided on the packing. You will usually be provided with O-rings. If these are not entirely flat, put weight on them to flatten them out. This is to ensure the optimal sealing results.

3. Initial Preparations To Follow

Turn off the water supply to the filter. This is usually found near the filter canister. If there is not a direct water supply valve, turn off the main water supply of the building. Remove any present water and pressure in the tap by opening the tap at the sink fed by the filter. Place a towel under the filter and unscrew the housing container. You can use a strap wrench for this step. Empty any water into the sink then remove and dispose of the old filter. Thoroughly clean the container.

4. Tips On How To Go About Installing The New Cartridge

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to insert the new cartridge, then screw the container back into the filter head. Ideally, hand-tighten it to avoid damaging the water filter. If you opened any taps during the replacement process, shut them off. Now, turn the water supply on and check for any leakages. If the filter drips, tighten it further. Further leakages may be due to a faulty O-ring, so in this case, disassemble the unit and replace the O-ring. When you are done, turn on a tap in the sink and let the water flow for about 5 minutes. This is done to allow excess carbon dust to flow out. Use plumber’s silicone grease on the O-rings to make the housing easier to remove on your next filter replacement. After you change the filter, allow the water to flow through the filter before drinking. This will allow any leftover impurities to flow out of the system. After a few minutes, the water should be safe for drinking.

5. The Date Of Replacement

It is a good idea to write the date on masking tape and place this on the filter. This will help a lot when you get to the next filter change. Also, make sure to follow the manufacturer’s suggested replacement timetable closely. Never let your replacement run overdue. If the water changes taste before the suggested time, it should be a clear indicator that your filter needs replacement.
