A broken outdoor outlet cover needs to be repaired quickly because the damaged cover can be hazardous to you and others in your home. Fortunately, replacing a broken outlet cover requires only a few materials and can be fixed without too much trouble.
Tools Needed
- New outlet cover;
- Screwdriver;
- Outdoor weatherproof caulk, and;
- Gloves.
Step 1- Turn Off the Power Supply
The first step in doing any kind of electrical work is to ensure the power supply has been shut off. This is necessary even for something as simple as an outlet cover to prevent and deter any kind of hazardous event.
Step 2- Remove Old Outlet Cover
Next, you’ll want to remove the old outlet cover. Take your screwdriver and unscrew the screws attaching the cover to the outlet. It’s probably a good idea to take the old one to the hardware store with you when you purchase the new one. You may want to upgrade to a weatherproof outlet cover if you don’t already have one. Overall, taking the old one with you to the store allows you will buy the correct size and upgrade you outlet as desired.
Step 3- Install New Cover
Finally, line up the new cover and screw it securely on the outlet with the screwdriver. You’ll want to make sure everything lines up and the outlet is in the right place. You’ll also want to check for gaps between the outlet itself and the cover. If there are some gaps, take the cover off and re-fasten it once more to close the gap. Once the new cover is in place, put on your gloves and use the caulk to seal and weatherproof the new cover. The caulk may need to cure for a few hours or even a full day for optimal protection.
