Fix a Clogged Toilet Using Green Bathroom Products

by DoItYourself Staff

Fixing a clogged toilet can be accomplished using green bathroom products. These do not necessarily include anything you pour down into the toilet, but they may. The greenest of products are things you can use over and over again for years such as plungers and drain snakes. Other than that, there are products you can use that don’t require noxious chemicals.

Drain Tools

Although a plunger is manufactured industrially, it will last a very long time. Using a plunger should be the first thing you try to unclog toilet. Of course, they do not always work.

Another tool that most people do not keep conveniently around the house is a drain snake and auger. The coil winds its way down the drain, and the auger attaches to your end. A crank then turns the snake inside the drain until the clog comes free.

Both of these methods require no chemicals or liquids of any kind be poured down the drain.

Green Products

If you have tried a plunger and it has not worked, consider some common remedies. Pouring a gallon of very hot water into the toilet sometimes works, as does a combination of baking soda and vinegar followed by hot water. Pour the baking soda in first then the vinegar. Follow in a minute with a bucket of hot water. You can also try turning the water off to the toilet and flushing. Believe it or not, this may work to wrestle the clog free.

You do not need chemicals to unclog toilets. Tools and simple (and green) products will accomplish the task with no environmental damage.
