Fix Your Broken Garage Door Spring

A broken garage door spring may need replacing if you find that your garage door will not open. Follow these easy instructions to replace the spring, then the door should be as good as new.

Assess Which Type of Spring You Have

Torsion springs are attached to a plate at the centre of the door frame at one end and twist when the door is opened.

Side mounted springs are attached to the sides of the door frame, which spread the tension more evenly than torsion springs. For this reason, it is strongly recommended that you do not attempt to repair or replace torsion springs, as the tension is so great that it is can cause injury.

Release the Tension and Remove the Springs

The first step is to open the door as widely as possible to release the tension in the. Clamp the door in this position, and release the safety cable. Remove the broken garage door spring by disconnecting it from both ends. Also, be sure to clean the fittings thoroughly.

Replace the Broken Springs

Attach the new spring in accordance with the manufacturer’s guidelines. When the safety cables have been reinstalled, you may need to tighten the springs for increased tension.
