Fixing a Blown Cooktop Element

by DoItYourself Staff

Do you spend a huge amount on regular cooktop repairs and servicing? You can now fix the cook tops on your own at the comfort of your home. Simple and easy repair steps will help you to mend your cooktop in no time.

Step 1: Spot the problem

Check the electrical service panel and the electric cord if the cooktop does not turn on.

Make sure that the element is plugged properly into the receptacle.

Step 2: Terminate the supply of electricity

Switch off the main supply and plug-off the heating element. Examine the element for any sort of burns or holes. Clean the tarnished terminals with fine steel wool.

Step 3: Change the receptacle

Inspect the element by plugging into a different receptacle. Do not forget to turn the power off, while doing so. Now, turn the power back on and test if the element gets heated. Replace the element if it still fails to work.

Step 4: Test the Prongs

Check the prongs by lifting the front of the element. Pull the element out and observe if the prongs are burnt or damaged.

Step 5: Test the switch

Disconnect the main supply of power to avoid any electric currents. Unscrew the clips at either end of the control panel. Detach the wire from the terminals parallel to the burner.

Test the burner by setting the Multimeter to RX1. Replace the switch if it fails to function.

Step 6: Test the element

Plug out the element from its place and install it again. This might sometimes help to start the element. If it does not do so, you need to replace the element and the receptacle.

Step 7: Replace the element

Replace the faulty element with a new element. Replacement parts can be obtained from a hardware or electric appliance store. A screw driver is required for replacing the element. Pull out the element till you notice a white porcelain insulator. The insulator can be identified by clips on either side. A directly-wired element can be screwed by attaching the two halves of the porcelain insulator. Firmly snap the clips in place.

Step 8: Undo the insulator

Open the insulator with a screwdriver. Pry gently under the side of a clip. Repeat the procedure for the other clip. Detach the two halves of the insulator.

Step 9: Remove the screws

Take away the screws that keep the element in place. Use a screw driver for this particular activity. Assemble both the elements together and ensure that the wires are not left exposed. Test the element by switching on the cooktop.

Step 9: Replace the receptacle

Detach the old receptacle. Use a screwdriver to detach it. Lift the corners of the cooktop to access the wiring. Take out the receptacle and wrap the wires with a masking tape.
Mark them to make it easy while installing the new receptacle. Cut the wires and seek a replacement from an electrical-appliance store. You can now install the new receptacle.
Install the element after installing the receptacle in the cooktop.
