Flea Extermination and Prevention

by DoItYourself Staff

Flea extermination and prevention in your home can be a tough battle. Fleas reproduce rapidly and can take over a home in a very short period of time. They can be a health problem not only for pets, but for their owners as well. The following are a few common sense ways to rid your home of these pests and keep them out.

Treat your Carpets

Commercial carpet powders and sprays can be purchased in any variety store. Follow the directions on the packaging to kill adult fleas and their eggs. Make sure you cover all the corners and any warm place where the eggs can breed.

Vacuum Regularly

This will keep fleas and their eggs from infesting your carpet. However, if you are already having trouble with fleas you will need to empty your vacuum cleaner after each use. Remember to vacuum the corners and warm areas thoroughly.

Bombs Away

If you have a serious flea infestation chemical foggers can be purchased that will treat the whole house. For safety be sure to follow the directions carefully. Be sure to wash any exposed hard surfaces and all bedding afterward.

Treat your Pets for Prevention

Be sure to give your pets a thorough treatment. Commercial flea drops can be purchased at variety and pet specialty stores. These will kill adult fleas and eggs and keep your pet pest free if you treat them on a monthly basis.
