Floor Outlet Cover Installation Basics
A floor outlet cover is a useful item to have in an area where you need an electrical outlet, but there is no wall nearby.
Durability is Key
Although it may be tempting to put a standard wall box in the floor with a standard wall outlet cover, avoid that solution. The wall outlet covers are not sturdy enough to handle foot traffic, and will soon crack.
In addition, there is a danger of electrical shock because of cracked and broken cover plates as well as shorts in the electrical system caused by liquids spilled onto the floor.
Higher Cost
The floor outlet covers you want to use are made of brass with a threaded or snap open brass cover that protects the outlet when not in use. These outlet covers cost significantly more than a wall outlet cover, but the extra cost is worth the expense.
Plan Location
If there is no box in the floor for the outlet, look at the current wiring in the room, especially below the floor. The box needs to be located near an existing circuit. Locate the box floor joists. Outline the box on the floor, then use a keyhole or jigsaw to cut out the piece of floor. Install the box to the floor and fasten it securely. Turn the power off to the circuit you are joining, and then wire the box.
Install Outlet Cover
Although the floor outlet covers have a different look than a wall outlet, they install in much the same way. Use the brass screws that come with the cover.
