Flowering Ground Cover: 5 Varieties

by DoItYourself Staff

Flowering ground cover can give a fresh and natural look to any garden or area of the lawn. There are a seemingly endless amount of flowering ground cover plants that are available for you to place in your garden or on your property. While each company may have it’s own hybrid and own special plants, there are five general varieties of flowering ground cover that could be perfect for your home. Each one offers something unique and refreshing to your garden.

1. Bath’s Pink
Known as Dianthus, Bath’s pink flowering ground cover is one of the best ground covering plants for your home. The pink flowers are known for being strong, and staying pink longer than any other similar plant. The plant really is strong; it can handle a wide variety of soil. As any other ground cover plant, however, Bath’s Pink needs the perfect amount of water, mixed with the proper drainage.

2. Bunny Tails
Bunny tails are known for growing in height (up to 2 feet), and are also known for their ground cover (up to and over 3 feet). Bunny tails give off a dark red, almost black-red flower than actually resembles a bunny’s tail. Bunny tails, much like other types of flowering ground cover, need the right water to thrive. They also may need fertilizer, depending on your soil. The fertilizer will help them to grow stronger and faster.

3. Ground Covering Roses
Ground covering roses come in all different shapes and sizes. The ground covering roses bloom multiple roses on one plant, allowing the ground to be covered in a mix of foliage and flowers. The roses will require the right amount of water, but will be beautiful for your home. They come in various shapes and sizes, so be sure to pick the ground covering rose that goes best with your entire garden.

4. Walker’s Low

Walker’s low is a slightly different type of ground covering plant that could be perfect for your home. The Walker’s Low (Botanical Name: Nepeta X faassenii) features tightly packed ground cover, which could give off a better look. The plant will grow under 2 feet high (generally). The Walker’s Low has a unique scent that many fall in love with. When flowered, they give off a purple and blue flower throughout their ground cover.

5. Oreganos
Do not be confused: Oreganos, while in the family of oregano, is not to be used as a culinary herb. The specific plant, Origanum Laevigatum, gives off beautiful flowers while it covers the ground. The flowers are purple and pink, giving off an elegant look while covering the ground of your lawn or garden. There is one major benefit to this plant; it requires little maintenance. It is a tough plant, and can handle high amounts of sunlight and small amounts of water. Placing it in better conditions is a sure way to make it thrive, however.
