Flue Fire
A flue fire is caused by a buildup of creosote inside of a chimney. If a fire is hot enough it can start your chimney on fire and cause a lot of problems. Many people are not aware of the danger of a flue fire.
- The first thing to do once you realize you have a flue fire is to call 911. This type of fire is capable of spreading and consuming your home.
- Move everyone out of the house just to be safe; don’t forget your pets too.
- Try to stifle the fire by closing your fireplace or wood stove doors.
- Use a hose to prevent the sparks from igniting your roof from the flue. Don’t get the chimney wet because the cooling of the bricks could cause an explosion.
- Sometimes the fire can be extinguished by throwing water on the fire to create steam
Identifying a Flue Fire
Most people realize that they have a problem when they hear the noise from the starting of a flue fire. It will sound like a huge “rush” of wind. Go outside to see if there are flames coming out of your chimney flue and then call the fire department.
