Foyer Light Fixture Selection

Selecting the right foyer light fixture is a process that requires the consideration of a number of different factors. This will allow you to pick a foyer light fixture which works well with the room and one which is safe to hang.

Considering the Safety Factors

There are many options available for a foyer light fixture. When considering such an option you must consider some safety factors for your foyer. One of the biggest things to consider is the type of ceiling electrical box that is available. If none is available then one will need to be added. Check to see what type of electrical box is available if one already exists. Certain types of electrical boxes are not well designed for hanging heavier lights such as chandeliers. Electrical boxes which are nailed directly into a ceiling stud will be able to support nearly any type of light fixture.

If you need to add an electrical box then consider the type of fixture you will be adding. If you are adding a heavy fixture then you should use an electrical box that is nailed into the stud. If you are using a light weight small fixture then you can use a simple cut in electrical box. A stud mounted box is harder to install but allows for much heavier fixtures.

Another thing to consider in regards to safety is the type of electrical wiring which is available and the breaker that the foyer is connected to. Look for fixtures which utilize a level of electricity that will fit well within the abilities of the breaker. When considering this you will also need to look at the other devices which are on the same circuit and how many amps each one of those devices are drawing. This will help to prevent problems which could lead to the breaker being tripped and a potential electrical fire.

Picking Out the Light Fixture

When you are selecting the light fixture the main goal should be to select one which fits your room in size and design. One thing to consider when selecting the design is that you may eventually change the general color scheme of your foyer. It is best to select a style and color that is somewhat neutral so if you do eventually change the design, it will still fit.

Other Things to Consider

If your foyer does not already have a light fixture, check for a ceiling electrical box. This will be covered by a blank plate. If there is no electrical box available then you will need to add one so this will involve some electrical wiring. When planning this try to wire into a circuit which is not under a heavy load. If your foyer has a recessed light, then you will need to switch the recessed can out with a standard electrical box and patch the ceiling.
