Fridge Repair: Fridge Doesn't Run and Light Doesn't Work
If your refrigerator light doesn't work or the unit doesn't run at all, try your own fridge repair before you call a professional. Follow the tips below to determine the root of the problem and take steps to fix it.
Check the Power
Almost every refrigerator problem starts with the power. To ensure full functionality of your fridge, make sure that it is plugged into the outlet properly. You may also want to check for the workability of your circuit breakers, in case your fridge still doesn’t work after plugging it in properly. After you have done all these and your fridge still doesn’t work, you have to unplug it first before running an inspection to avoid electric shock.
Check the Electric Cords
Over time, some refrigerator cords get damaged due to wear and tear. Also, an extension cord you might be using could undergo the same wear and tear process. To ensure that your fridge is working properly, and to also avoid the risk of short circuit which may lead to fire, you should check the electrical cords of the appliance for chips and cuts. When you find that the cords are damaged, you should replace it immediately.
When Light doesn’t Work
This is the easiest part of the fridge to troubleshoot. If the light doesn’t work, try replacing the bulb with the same wattage and install it. If after you have installed it and it still doesn’t turn on, the switch might be the cause of the problem. Check for the wiring of the switch for some busted wires and try to attach them together.
Once you have replaced the bulb and the light of the fridge is turned on but the fridge itself doesn’t seem to work, the first thing to do is check the temperature control knob inside the fridge. Make sure that these knobs are turned on to the desired coldness setting. If you are still having trouble after doing this, you may need to check for the airflow of your fridge. You should be able to place your refrigerator at least three inches away from the walls to make sure the air is properly flowing and to prevent the appliance from overheating. For you to be able to check if your fridge is overheating, unplug it for a few hours and turn it back on. If the compressor is running after you have turned it on, it overheated. In this case, you might need to clean the condenser coils under your appliance to make sure that the dust does not build up.
