Fridge Repair Made Easy

by DoItYourself Staff

A broken refrigerator will cost you money in lost food, so some knowledge of fridge repair is useful for the do-it-yourself enthusiast. If you have a problem with your fridge, explore these before you call the repair man.

Safety First

Unplug the refrigerator before you do anything to it, to avoid getting a nasty shock. The capacitor inside the fridge will still hold some charge even when the appliance has been turned off, so you need to discharge it before attempting any repairs.

Start with the Door

The door seal might hold the secret of your refrigerator’s reduced performance. Is the seal broken or cracked? Are the door hinges loose? If so, the door may be causing cool air to escape and affecting the unit’s efficiency. As long as you purchase a replacement seal or hinges that are specifically for the model you own, replacing them is a straightforward kind of fridge repair.

Move on to the Fans

Check that the condenser and evaporator fans are rotating properly. If they are not, the cool air will not circulate as it should, and the refrigerator might be too hot. Replacing them or straightening their blades is simple to attempt.

Know Your Limits

Motor and compressor units in refrigerators are contained in sealed units, so if you know or suspect that there is a problem with either of them, this is best left to a professional.
