Garage Clutter Control and Organization
If your garage organization is completely out of control, and it is easy to lose sight of things, you need clutter control. People often feel they are too busy to keep their garage clean. It takes work and dedication. Procrastination gets a hold of people. After the clutter gets so immense, you just do not know where to start. It feels like you have nowhere to put anything. If you do not do something fast, it will just keep piling up. Applying clutter control means getting your garage cleaned up, and keeping it neat and organized. Maybe you'll actually be able to park your car in the garage, where it belongs, once you're done.
Needed Items:
- Boxes
- Trash bags
- Trashcan
- Storage items
Step 1 – Throw away the Junk
Get a box of garbage bags, as you will need a lot of them. Look through everything in you garage. If you do not use it, throw it away. Do not keep stuff that will just continue to sit there. Toss all the obvious trash right away. Then look through the items you might want to keep. If you are not sure about an item, do not hesitate, just throw it away. The less clutter you have, the better. This is the only way to begin your clutter control. Do not leave these garbage bags in your garage. Once they are full, take them to the trash bin.
Step 2 – Take up Space
Every item should have a home. Find a place where each item belongs. It needs to be realistic and tidy. If you do not have a shelf, you might want to get one. Only if there is a good place to put it. Any new item you buy, make sure it will have a home before you buy it. Put any item that you are keeping somewhere specific in your garage that it can stay. If you use this item, make sure it gets back to its home. You have to be diligent. If you start getting lazy, and just leaving items wherever, you will have a mess again, and you are not practicing clutter control.
Step 3 – Support Storage
Get some storage items. Hooks and hangers usually serve well, if they can be hung out of the way. You can also get wall shelves and freestanding shelves. Some garages have a workbench, and these usually work well. There are other things that contribute to the clutter solution. Just look around and see what you might need. Make sure that any storage item you buy will have a plausible designated area.
Step 4 – Constant Trash Control
Keep recycling bins and trashcans in your garage. If you do not have anywhere to toss your trash, it might end up on the floor. Clutter control is mostly about putting things away in their proper place. You must be preemptive.
Step 5 – Diligence
Keep it clean. Every month or so, work on the garage. Make sure it is still clean, and throw away any items that got by you. If you just take a few minutes every month, you should be able to keep your garage clean, and clutter control won't be a problem anymore.
