Garden pond algae devour oxygen and prevent the other plants and animals in your pond from accessing it. If the algae are allowed to take over, other species disappear.
Remove Shade
The simplest, least invasive way to prevent it is to remove sources of shade from your pond. This could be as simple as taking out lily pads from the pond itself, and removing some plants from the banks.
Pond Dye
If this does not work, try using blue pond dye. This may sound unusual, but it is a recognised method of controlling algal bloom. The blue dye filters the sunlight. Accordingly, the garden pond algae do not have access to the right kind of light it needs to flourish. The dye is usually harmless to other plants and aquatic life.
Algicide
As a last resort, try an algicide. These chemicals can be specific and target only algae. However, you must check the manufacturer’s instructions if you have fish in your pond: some of the chemicals used are poisonous to fish.
