Gas Cooktop Advantages
There are many reasons you may be considering a new gas cooktop.
As you conduct your research, you will find two main categories of cooktops: gas and electric. Gas cooktops include all cooktops or inserts that run on natural gas or propane. The alternative is less diverse but equally self-explanatory: electric cooktops or inserts all run on electricity. Here are a few advantages gas cooktops have over electric cooktops.
Even Heating
While electric cooktop technology has improved over the years, the heating mechanism is still essentially a resistor. Most are in the form of a coil that generates heat by resisting the current of electricity. Over time, the coils develop weaknesses as a result of the impact of heat on metal. This, in turn, causes hot spots when cooking.
A gas cooktop burner, however, is fed by natural gas or propane that, when lit, spreads the flame in a perfect circle under the pot or pan. This provides even heating that results in fewer, if any, hot spots. Granted clogged burner jets can create undesirable hot spots when cooking on a gas cooktop. Unlike the hot spots due to weakened metal, however, a clogged burner jet can easily be cleaned with warm soapy water and a scrub brush.
Heat Control
In spite of the advances in electric cooktop technology, the heating elements take time to heat to the desired temperature and take even more time to cool down. This means that when you are cooking, you need to anticipate temperature changes so that the coil can cool down or heat up in time for that change to take place. A gas powered cooktop, on the other hand, provides control over the heat by allowing you direct control of the fuel that feeds the flame. This means the change in temperature is immediate when you adjust the knob.
Safer
The fact that the electrical coils retain heat long after they have been turned off and ceased to glow increases the possibility of major burns. While burns cannot be entirely avoided regardless of the cooking technology, the immediate control over the flame and heat that a gas cooktop provides, means that the risk of major burns is significantly reduced.
Power not Required
One of the more important advantages of a gas cooktop is that it does not require electricity to operate. True, the ignition system is electrical and requires electricity to work. However, the stove operates on propane or natural gas; both of which are flammable substances. As long as the fuel supply remains in tact, your gas cooktop will work. All you need is a match to light your stove.
Saves Money
Unless your electricity and gas (natural or propane) are provided by the same company, a gas cooktop will save you money by lowering your electrical bill. Not only that, but the rates for natural gas tend to be lower than do the rates for electricity providing you with another way to save money.
For all of these reasons, a gas cooktop will provide you with peace of mind and control not only over your cooking temperatures but also over your cooking budget.
