Glass Block Shower Wall: Cleaning Tips

by DoItYourself Staff

If your glass block shower wall has recently come under attack from mold, mildew or other types of shower-related grime, you may be curious about how to properly clean it. Fortunately glass block is a simple material to clean, much more so than traditional shower tile.

Clean Your Grout First

As with traditional bathroom tile, you will need to clean your grout before cleaning your glass block shower wall. To do this, lightly soak the bristled end of a toothbrush or a small scrub brush with an abrasive commercial cleaner and gently scrub away any grime. When cleaning the grout, try not to put forth an excessive amount of elbow grease, as you'll want to avoid chipping away at the grout. Once you have fully purged the grout of filth, use a spray bottle full of water or a damp, nonabrasive cloth to get rid of your cleaner.

Use Mild Soap and Warm Water

When cleaning your glass block shower wall, use a homemade cleaning solution of warm water and mild liquid dish-washing soap to get rid of any dirt or debris. Lightly soak a nonabrasive washcloth in this solution and wipe your wall in a circular fashion. Again, make sure not to exert too much pressure.

Treat Any Mold or Mildew

When dealing with excessive mold or mildew, use a homemade cleaning solution of 1/4 cup white wine vinegar and 1 cup water. Once you've finished cleaning, rinse off your solution in the same fashion as your nonabrasive cleaner.
