Every once in a while the windows in your home will need glazing. This means removing an old window pane and replacing it with a new one. Glazing a window takes place because it is broken, the putty is loose, or the window is just letting in too much outside air. This is a project that can be completed within just a few hours.
- Remove the old window pane by breaking it with a hammer and removing the pieces.
- Use a putty knife, take out the old putty around the window and remove the glazing points.
- To glaze the window, roll out some putty into a 1/16th inch rope and press it against the inside edge of the window pane.
- Put the window and glazing points back into place.
- Roll out another rope of putty and put it around the window frame. Remove the excess putty with the putty knife.
Painting After you Glaze a Window
The putty has to dry for at least a week after glazing the window. After that you can paint the putty so it matches the rest of the window. Remember to use tape and newspaper so you don't get any paint on the window pane.
