Green Roof Plants: What to Look For


In areas that are full of concrete and pavement, a new trend in planting a green roof plants has become increasingly popular. In addition to beautifying a home, the green roof also reduces the effects of heat.

What to Look for in Plants for Green Roofs

Green roof plants need to have the following characteristics:

  • rapid growth and continual spreading
  • ability to tolerate droughts and high winds
  • low growth height
  • low maintenance - trimming, weeding, feeding
  • fibrous root systems
  • no specific irrigation and nutritional needs
  • low maintenance
  • no airborne seeds that spread to land areas

The best roofs are flat however sloped roofs can also work if the pitch is not too steep. With climate a factor, growers need to consider if they need to roof to remain green in winter or cold seasons. Depending on the structural qualities of a roof, the style can be intensive with 12” of soil and a wide variety of plants, versus an extensive style that employs about 3” of soil and a limited selection of plants. Often extensive roofs are easier and less expensive to maintain.

Plant Selection

Plants that are recommended for use on green roofs are:

  • hardy succulents - various species of sedum and Talinum
  • grasses such as Andropogon, Carex, or Sporoblus
  • herbaceous perennials – Phlox, Petrorhagiz
  • flowers that attact butterflies and hummingbirds
  • various species of low growing evergreens
