Greenhouse Irrigation: Install a Drip Irrigation System

by DoItYourself Staff

When it comes to greenhouse irrigation, nothing really compares to the consistency of a drip irrigation system. Even though there are many brands and styles of drip irrigation systems available, they're all installed in roughly the same way.

Step 1 - Attaching the Main Hose

The main hose feeds the water to the irrigation system. It's the bread and butter of the entire watering process. There are two ways to do this.

  1. Attach the included hose fitting to the back flow prevention valve, by threading it onto the bottom of it. Tighten the fitting.
  2. Attach the 1/2-inch diameter tube to the fitting, then push the locking ring up and around it. While holding the tubing, push the tubing onto the fitting as far as it will go. While holding the tube, thread the locking ring of the fitting counterclockwise over the tubing, then tighten.

Step 2 - The Tubing

The tubing will be the item actually doing all of the work. Lay the tube along the path where you want to place it. If you are planning on having to branch off in different directions then you will need to use T-fittings. If you have too much tubing, use scissors or a sharp knife to cut it.

Before continuing, turn on the faucet in order to flush out any debris that may be in the hose. You will want to do this before and during the installation of the stakes.

Step 3 - Misting Stake Assembly

These devices are what will actually water your plants in the greenhouse (or outdoor garden). Before beginning to place these, you need to know where to place them. When you are sure you want a misting stake in an area, use a punch tool to punch a hole into the tubing you placed in Step 2. If you make a mistake, you can plug holes with products found at home improvement stores.

When it's time to install the misting stakes, you will place the barbed end into the holes you made. The last step is to put the stake into the ground. Use a rubber mallet if the ground proves to be too hard.

Step 4 - Finishing and Testing the System

When you are finished placing all of the stakes, you can finish the installation by placing the end fitting onto the end of the 1/2-inch tubing. Fold the tube over once and through the hole of the fitting to pinch the hose shut. Now you can turn on the water and check the system.

At this stage you can change watering direction, see if there are any leaks and see whether the system is spraying correctly. When you are satisfied, cover the tubing with dark mulch.

If you need to add or repair tubing, you can purchase another kit. These are great for spare parts, too.
