Hanging Ceiling Lamp: Installation Instructions

A hanging ceiling lamp is a good option for adding lighting to the room without taking up valuable floor space. The steps required to install a hanging ceiling lamp are dependent on whether or not you will need to rewire the ceiling.

Tools and Materials Needed:

  • Flathead and Philips Head Screwdrivers
  • Ceiling Mounted Electrical Box
  • Drywall Saw
  • Hammer
  • 12 x 2 Electrical Wiring
  • Wall Mounted Cut In Electrical Box
  • Light Switch
  • Drill
  • 15” Paddle Bit
  • Side Cutting Pliers
  • Wire Nuts

Running the Wiring and Installing the Electrical Boxes

If no electrical box and wiring is present it will be necessary to install the electric box in the ceiling. You may also want to install a light switch which will allow you to control the light from a switch.

Step 1- Turn Power Off

Turn power off to the room you will be working in using the breaker panel.

Step 2 – Find The Stud

Find the ceiling stud closest to the location where you want to mount your new ceiling lamp.

Step 3 – Cut A Hole

Using your ceiling electrical box as a template cut a hole using a drywall saw.

Step 4- Find A Light Switch Location

Select a location on the wall where you want to install the light switch. Make sure you put it in a location that is convenient yet not noticeable.

Step 5- Cut Another Hole

Using your wall mounted electrical box as a template cut a whole using a drywall saw.

Step 6- Drill a Hole

Using your drill, drill a hole in the top stud of the wall where you are mounting your switch.

Step 7- Run Electrical Wiring

Run electrical wiring from the hole in your ceiling to the hole cut out for your light switch. Then, run a second electric wire from the wall outlet to your nearest receptacle.

Step 8- Insert Wire And Mount To Ceiling

Insert the wire through the cutouts on the ceiling electrical box and mount it in the ceiling. This is done by hammering the two nails into the ceiling stud. It is important to not use a cut in box for ceiling fixtures because these run a risk of breaking through the drywall over time.

Step 9- Insert Wire And Mount To Wall

Insert the wire through the cut outs on your wall mounted electrical box and install it in the wall.

Step 10 – Tie The Wires

Tie the new wire run from the switch to the receptacle into the receptacle. The hot wire goes to the copper screw, neutral goes to the silver screw and the ground is attached to the green ground screw.

Install your new light switch with the wire coming from the receptacle tied into the constant hot side and the wire going to the fan tied into the switch side. The copper screw is hot, the silver is neutral and the green screw is ground.

Installing the New Ceiling Lamp

Step 1-Mounting Brackets

Attach the mounting bracket to your ceiling electrical box using the supplied screws.

Step 2-Connect the Wires

Connect the wires to the new ceiling lamp. Ceiling lamps use black, white and copper wires. The white is hot, the black is neutral and the copper wire is ground. Tie the ground wires to the ground screw found in the electrical box. Use your side cutting pliers to twist the wires together tightly and screw wire nuts onto the wires.

Step 3-Hang the Lamp

Hang the ceiling lamp on the bracket and install the cover plate using the supplied screws.

Step 4-Power and Test

Turn the power back on to the room using your breaker panel and test.
