Many people use heating oil to heat their home. Many people use it and no one can control the price of it. This is especially true if you live out in the country where there’s only one company that can service you. However, there are ways to save yourself money on the cost of your heating oil.

• Weather Stripping – Right before it gets cold outside you should use seal off your windows with weather stripping. If you don’t want to purchase the window kits they have for each window you can build your own kit by using weather strips, plastic to cover the outside of the window, and duct tape. This method can save you up to 75% per window.
• Keeping the Heat down – You can save up to another 35% on your heating oil just by keeping the heat turned down a little. Setting the thermostat to around 70 would be perfect. If you get cold throw on a little extra clothing. If no one’s home during the day then keep it set to 65.

Alternative Power Sources to Heating Oil

If you use an electric heater rather than heating oil you could drastically save money if you can afford to put up solar panels on your house. The solar panels would allow you to heat your house for free during the day since you could have everything run off of it including your heater.
