According to the United States Census Bureau, nearly 43 million Americans move to a new home each year, with half of these people relocating during the summer months when the weather is most cooperative and the kids are out of school.
Since most of us have moved at some point in our lives, we all know the process of moving can sometimes be disruptive and stressful. If you know anyone moving this summer, the following tips can help you ease their stress and help them settle more comfortably into their new home:
- Be Proactive. Bring packing supplies to their home and help pack boxes. You can also organize a tag sale to clear out any unwanted but still useful items.
- Lend a Helping Hand. Offer to babysit the kids or walk the dog while your friends and family are moving. You can also help by bringing a pizza for dinner or a home-cooked meal.
- Deliver a Sense of "home." Sometimes all it takes to make someone feel at home is a bouquet of pretty flowers or the scent of freshly-brewed coffee wafting through the air. Give presents that instill comfort and warmth, like scented candles, flowers, pictures of loved ones, or someone's favorite foods and treats. Many companies have created special products to help movers better ease into their new home and new life.
- Get Them "In the Know." Help your friends discover their new neighborhood by giving them a new membership to the local gym, or gift certificate to a beauty salon or restaurant in the area.
- Set Up Tranquility. Help your friends settle into their new home by cleaning, unpacking and setting up their belongings.
If new people are moving into your neighborhood, welcome them with any of the great gift ideas listed above. You can also pass them some literature on the neighborhood, local organizations or other points of interest.
